Let’s Talk About Socks

Let’s Talk About Socks

A new men’s statement sock trend has emerged over the Summer and is on track to continue throughout the coming seasons. Designers like: Alessandro Michele for Gucci, and coveted streetwear brands like: Off-White and Vetements have taken the once only utilitarian item from a mere whisper to a bold statement by incorporating whimsical details like: embroidery, logos, and even a reminder of which foot to place each sock on! (see below)

I’ve always been a fan of fun socks and have shopped brands like Happy Socks, religiously. These brands, however are leading the charge in the fashion sock revolution and with price tags reaching upwards of $80.00, don’t be surprised when you see more creeping out from under pants to over them.

Take a look at a few of my favorite shots featuring some statement socks of my own. I’m dying for these, next!

These from Vetements have “Left” and “Right” embroidered on them..in case you forget.

From Gucci. There’s an embroidered tiger on each side. See the full design, here.

Summer Sipper: A Refreshing Pineapple Margarita

Summer Sipper: A Refreshing Pineapple Margarita

This pineapple margarita has become the go-to drink in our house because it’s so easy to make. The sweet and tart balance of ingredients is the perfect combo on a hot summer day. Have a sip on one this weekend, and let me know how you like it in the comments below!

What You’ll Need:

Pineapple Juice

Fresh Lime Juice

Triple Sec

Tequila (I use Don Julio Blanco as pictured)

Fresh Pineapple for Garnish (optional)

How to Make:

In a cocktail shaker, combine the juice of 1 lime, 4 ounces of tequila and 2 ounces of triple sec. Add 4 ounces of pineapple juice (if using the pictured Dole size, it’s a little over half of one can per drink.) Squeeze in a couple drops of agave and shake with ice. Pour in a salted 12 ounce glass and add more ice if desired. Garnish with a pineapple slice.

A Tasty Variation:

Use your favorite Mezcal or spicy tequila for some added smokiness or heat. ?

When Off-White is Spot On: Virgil Abloh Takes the Pitti Uomo Stage by Storm

When Off-White is Spot On: Virgil Abloh Takes the Pitti Uomo Stage by Storm

This week, Virgil Abloh presented his Spring/Summer 2018 collection for Off-White, his street-wear and street-wise label, to eager fans at Pitti Uomo. Said to be Abloh’s most important collection to date, the presentation included politically-charged poems that were projected onto the walls of the building. The text   which was re-imagined by artist, Jenny Holzer by incorporating light and bold typography dealt with the socio-political crises in both Syria and Palestine. In a recent interview with WWD, Abloh described the show as “highly influenced by the current time that we are in and I think there are relevant issues in terms of politics and the young generation versus the preceding generations..”

The collection titled, Temperature, was inspired by Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury’s controversial novel we all had to read (or pretended to read) in high school. Models charged the dimly-lit runway in a primarily neutral palette of blacks and whites. Abloh’s elevated street style aesthetic was present in exaggerated collars, unexpected zip-off details, and belted waists. Pops of oranges and blues were introduced with over-sized plastic bags, hoods and puffer vests all resembling elements of life preserving gear- a theme that ran through the collection as the designer’s nod to the many lives lost of refugees crossing the Mediterranean in escape of warfare.

Abloh, who is the son of an immigrant from Ghana, undoubtedly feels the closeness of today’s political climate to home. “In this climate, coming off recent elections, I have a voice,” the designer told Vogue in response to the collection… “In my work, I react.”
